Sovan Macha
The famous Cambodian legend called the Reamker, the Cambodian version of the Ramayana story, tells of the monkey general Hanuman, who together with his monkey army attempted to build a bridge across the sea to rescue a princess that had been taken prisoner.
The monkey army piled up stones to make the bridge, but these stones keep disappearing. Hanuman jumped into the sea to investigate, and there he found the beautiful mermaid Sovann Macha, which means 'Golden Fish' in Khmer, who had been sabotaging him in a playful way. They fell in love, she became his partner in the fight against evil, and the mother of the monkey/fish. |
